One of the first things I learned was that before you can break the rules, you need to know them intimately. A great place I found recently was [link] pose maniacs, the page I've linked is for 30 second drawing. It's a little tool I've started using which makes you work faster to depict the human figure. One of the things I've noticed since using it, is that I can depict a figure much more quickly and believably now.
I guess the only other thing would be to keep drawing. I allowed other things to get in the way, and my art has suffered for it, and now I'm trying to get back on track after being told I'm not good enough for a job...
